Downtown Denver Fun: Great Urban Race is Today!

Part Amazing Race, part exploring in your hometown, today is the Denver stage of the Great Urban Race.  Teams of 2 – 4 compete in an event with brain teasers, physical challenges, needle in the haystack type of clues and eating challenges.  It’s not Fear Factor, so you eat chocolate chip cookies instead of fried bugs. Teams will get a chance to explore different parts of the city. Smart businesses will take advantage of the increased foot traffic and racers will spend as much time explaining what they are doing to people as they will with some tasks.

After crossing the finish line, you’ll need photographic evidence of completing many of the tasks, so lace up your sneakers and get ready for some fun. You can’t take cars, taxis, bicycles for this race, get ready to hoof it. Send us your pics and we’ll post the best ones here.

Today, the carvingfreshies crew is participating. Since it is not our first GUR event, we have some strategy learned through experience.

1. Smartphones are crucial to completing the race. You’ll need a fully charged phone with apps like Foursquare, Shazam, and YouTube downloaded and registered. Don’t wait until race day to get those apps started.

2. Bring a camera in addition to your smartphone. You may think that the smartphone can handle it all, but with the heavy lifting your phone will be doing, you’ll drain the battery. Nothing worse than running out of juice when you need proof of completion.

3. Have a partner team to race with you. Many of the clues ask for both team members to be in a photo. For example, if you have to find someone wearing a tie-dyed shirt and both team members need to be in the picture, you still need someone to take the picture. Plus, two teams also equals 4 brains to solve the brainteasers.

Great Urban Race is coming to a city near you. Get involved and have some fun.
